Gibraltar Events Autumn 2026: What Is Left, and What You Missed
Last checked
The September cluster has been and gone. Six dates remain between 9 November and 5 January, one of them decides a football group, and two have not been announced.
If you came to this page for the early September run, you have missed it. The Fair, the Music Festival, the Calpe Conference and National Day are all behind us. What is left of the 2026 season is six dates between 9 November and 5 January, one of which decides a football group, and two of which have still not been fully announced.
This guide was first written in June, when the whole calendar was ahead. It was rebuilt on 24 October 2026 against what actually happened and what is now confirmed. Where a date or a venue has not been published yet, it says so instead of guessing, and tells you who to ask.
If you are still choosing dates, our companion piece on the best time to visit Gibraltar month by month sets out the wider seasonal picture.
What is still to come
| Event | Date | Where | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gibunco Gibraltar Literary Festival | 9 to 15 November 2026 | Venues across Gibraltar | Confirmed |
| Andorra v Gibraltar, Nations League | 13 November 2026 | Encamp, Andorra | Confirmed, away fixture |
| Gibraltar v Malta, Nations League | 16 November 2026 | Europa Sports Park | Confirmed, decides the group |
| Christmas Festival of Lights | 20 November 2026 | Not yet announced | Date confirmed 1 October 2026 |
| New Year's Eve | 31 December 2026 | Grand Casemates Square | Annual fixture |
| Three Kings Cavalcade, or Reyes | Traditionally 5 January | Main Street | 2027 date not yet announced |
Four of those land inside twelve days in November. That cluster, not September, is what is worth booking around now.
The Literary Festival, 9 to 15 November
Gibraltar Cultural Services confirmed the dates on behalf of the Ministries of Culture and Tourism, and the Government announcement and the official tourist board listing both carry 9 to 15 November 2026. It is a week, not a weekend, and it spreads across venues rather than sitting in one hall.
The programme is where this festival earns its reputation, because the scale is small enough that you end up a few feet from people you have read. Gibraltar Cultural Services has published the running order: a literary walking tour on 9 November led by the historian Manolo Galliano, starting at the Garrison Library and finishing at BOOKgem, and that same evening John Suchet OBE on Beethoven by candlelight at Holy Trinity Cathedral with a string quartet from the Straits Philharmonic Orchestra.
On 10 November Grant Harrold hosts an afternoon tea at the Rock Hotel, and the Lightning Talks return to the Garrison Library, with Dr Alex Menez, Christina Giuffre, Katy Cheeswright, Karim Vatvani and Deborah Mattana. On 11 November Lord Charles Moore and Kate Ehrman give a semi dramatised account of Margaret Thatcher's last days in office at Grand Battery House, with questions afterwards. On 12 November Phil Manzanera OBE presents Revolucion to Roxy in the Aurora Ballroom at the Sunborn.
One warning worth more than any recommendation. Listed times differ between the ticketing page and the festival's own posts, by hours in at least one case. Take the time from the festival's own site and nowhere else. Our Gibunco Literary Festival guide covers the rest of the week.
The match that decides a group, 16 November
Gibraltar v Malta at home on 16 November is not a dead rubber. It is the last fixture in UEFA Nations League D Group 1 and it settles who wins the group. Going into the November window Malta led on 7 points from three matches, Gibraltar had 2 from two and Andorra 1 from three, so Gibraltar have to beat Andorra away on 13 November and then beat Malta at home to finish top. A draw in either match hands it to Malta.
Gibraltar have not lost yet. They drew 0-0 with Andorra at home on 27 September and 1-1 away in Malta on 1 October, which is two points from two games and no defeats, and for a side ranked where Gibraltar are ranked that is already a decent autumn. The UEFA fixture list by team is the place to confirm both dates before you book anything.
Two practical notes that most listings get wrong. Victoria Stadium is being rebuilt, so home internationals are being played at Europa Sports Park at Europa Point, which some listings still call Europa Point Stadium. And kick off times for the November matches are given differently by different sites, from mid afternoon to quarter to eight, so check with the Gibraltar Football Association rather than an aggregator. Our guide to Gibraltar's home internationals has the background on getting tickets.
Tickets for a competitive home international here cost a fraction of what the same fixture would cost almost anywhere else in Europe, and the ground sits on a clifftop above the Strait. That is the sort of thing Gibraltar is actually good at.
Christmas Festival of Lights, 20 November
The June version of this page said late November, date to be confirmed. It is now confirmed. Gibraltar Cultural Services announced on 1 October 2026 that the Festival of Lights will be held on 20 November, an evening of seasonal entertainment and family activities that opens the festive season.
What has not been announced is the venue or the programme. The 2025 edition ran in Grand Casemates Square with two performances and entry through Market Place, so Casemates is the reasonable assumption, but the October announcement did not name it and we are not going to pretend otherwise. Watch Gibraltar Cultural Services for the detail. Our Festival of Lights guide will carry it when it lands.
New Year's Eve, and the one date nobody has published
New Year's Eve on 31 December 2026 is the straightforward one: an open street party in Grand Casemates Square with fireworks at midnight, no ticket, no fuss. Our New Year's Eve guide covers where to stand.
The Three Kings Cavalcade, Reyes, is the one to be careful about. It is traditionally held on 5 January, and the 2026 edition ran on Monday 5 January from Casemates along Main Street, with illuminated floats and sweets thrown to children. 5 January 2027 falls on a Tuesday. But as of 24 October 2026 the Cavalcade Committee had not announced the 2027 date, so treat 5 January as the tradition rather than a published fact and confirm it with Gibraltar Cultural Services before you build a trip on it. Our Three Kings Cavalcade guide tracks the announcement.
What you missed, briefly
The Gibraltar Fair opened the season at the Ex-Rooke Site from 21 to 29 August, a traditional funfair that runs up to National Day and remains the cheapest evening out of the year for families.
The first week of September was the dense one. The Gibraltar Music Festival, billed as Summer Sessions, ran from 3 to 5 September at Europa Point with James Morrison, Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Tony Hadley, Billy Ocean and 10cc. Overlapping it, the Calpe Conference reached its 30th edition from 2 to 5 September at the University of Gibraltar, which is a serious gathering of Neanderthal and human evolution researchers rather than a public lecture series.
National Day fell on 10 September, and it is worth correcting one thing that half the internet still says about it. The mass release of red and white balloons, one for every resident, ran from 1992 and was ended in 2016 on environmental grounds. It has not happened for ten years. The evening now runs on fireworks and a drone display over the harbour. Any guide that still promises you balloons has not been to Gibraltar this decade.
The month closed with We Love the 90s on 26 September and Gibraltar's 0-0 draw with Andorra the following day.
How to stack the November window
Two stays do the heavy lifting. A week from 9 to 16 November gives you the entire Literary Festival and then the Malta match on the day you would otherwise be leaving. A shorter stay from 15 to 20 November gives you the festival's closing day, the match, and then the Festival of Lights, with four quiet days in between that are good for the Upper Rock in the kind of weather you will not get in August.
Gibraltar is under seven square kilometres, so none of this needs a car. Casemates Square and Main Street are a walk from anywhere in town, and Europa Point is a short bus or taxi ride. Our guide on how to get to Gibraltar by flight, driving or the border sets out the arrival options, and the Rock of Gibraltar guide and the food and drink guide cover the days in between.
One thing has changed since the June version that matters more than any of the events. Routine passport checks at the land frontier with Spain ended on 15 July 2026, so a day either side in Spain no longer costs you an hour in a queue. Our explainer on what changed at the border has the detail, including the catch about Schengen days.
Booking, and why November is the easy month
September is the expensive week here and it is gone. November is the opposite: the Literary Festival fills rooms in a civilised way rather than a frantic one, the weather is mild rather than hot, and rates are well off the summer peak. If you were put off by the September crush, this is the better trip anyway.
The exceptions are the match weekend of 13 to 16 November and the nights around 31 December, both of which tighten up. Book those early. Everything else in the remaining calendar can be arranged with a few weeks' notice.
What this page cannot tell you
Three things are genuinely unknown as of 24 October 2026: the venue and programme for the Festival of Lights on 20 November, the 2027 date for the Three Kings Cavalcade, and the confirmed kick off times for the two November internationals. For the first two, Gibraltar Cultural Services is the source. For the third, the Gibraltar Football Association. We would rather send you to them than invent a detail that reads well.
Where to stay for the rest of the season
Victory Suites is a purpose built apart hotel on Devils Tower Road with 100+ serviced apartments, about ten minutes on foot from Grand Casemates Square and a few minutes from the airport terminal. Every apartment has a full kitchen and a separate living area, which earns its keep on a week built around evening events when you want breakfast on your own schedule. There is an indoor pool and a gym in the building, check in is self service, and rates step down at seven nights. We sell through 300+ booking channels and the direct rate is the best of them.
For the individual events, read our dedicated guides: Gibraltar Music Festival, Calpe Conference, Gibraltar National Day, Gibraltar Wine Festival, Gibraltar Fair, We Love the 90s and Gibraltar Football Internationals. Book direct at Victory Suites and let the November window come to you.
Frequently asked questions
What Gibraltar events are still to come in 2026?
Six dates remain. The Gibunco Gibraltar Literary Festival runs from 9 to 15 November 2026. Gibraltar play Andorra away on 13 November and Malta at home on 16 November in the UEFA Nations League. The Christmas Festival of Lights is on 20 November 2026. New Year's Eve is celebrated in Grand Casemates Square on 31 December, and the Three Kings Cavalcade traditionally follows on 5 January, although the 2027 date had not been announced as of 24 October 2026.
When is the Christmas Festival of Lights in Gibraltar in 2026?
Gibraltar Cultural Services announced on 1 October 2026 that the Festival of Lights will take place on 20 November 2026. It is an evening of seasonal entertainment and family activities that opens the festive season. The venue and the full programme had not been published when this page was updated on 24 October 2026. The 2025 edition was held in Grand Casemates Square with two performances and entry through Market Place, so Casemates is the likely setting, but check Gibraltar Cultural Services for confirmation.
Does the Gibraltar v Malta match on 16 November decide the group?
Yes. It is the final fixture in UEFA Nations League D Group 1. Going into the November window Malta led the group on 7 points from three matches, Gibraltar had 2 points from two and Andorra 1 from three. Gibraltar must win away to Andorra on 13 November and then beat Malta at home to finish top. A draw in either match gives Malta the group. Gibraltar are unbeaten so far, having drawn 0-0 with Andorra on 27 September and 1-1 in Malta on 1 October.
Where do Gibraltar play their home internationals in 2026?
At Europa Sports Park at Europa Point, which some listings still call Europa Point Stadium. Victoria Stadium, the usual national ground, is being rebuilt, so the men's team is using Europa Point as an interim home. Kick off times for the November fixtures are listed differently by different sites, so confirm with the Gibraltar Football Association rather than a fixture aggregator before travelling.
Are balloons still released on Gibraltar National Day?
No, and this is the most repeated error about the day. The release of thousands of red and white balloons, one for each resident, ran from the first National Day in 1992 and was ended in 2016 on environmental grounds. It has not taken place for ten years. The evening now runs on fireworks and a drone display over the harbour. Guides that still describe a balloon release are copying each other rather than reporting what happens.
Which week in November should I visit Gibraltar?
If you want the most in one trip, stay from 9 to 16 November 2026. That covers the whole Gibunco Literary Festival and finishes with Gibraltar v Malta at Europa Point. If you would rather have space between events, 15 to 20 November gives you the festival's last day, the match and then the Christmas Festival of Lights, with quiet days in between for the Upper Rock. Either way, November is milder and cheaper than the September peak.
Where is the best place to stay for Gibraltar's remaining autumn events?
Victory Suites on Devils Tower Road is about ten minutes on foot from Grand Casemates Square and a few minutes from Gibraltar International Airport, which puts it within walking distance of most of the November calendar. It has 100+ serviced apartments with full kitchens and separate living areas, an indoor pool, a gym and self service check in, and rates step down at seven nights. The full kitchens matter most on a stay built around evening events.
