Hotel in Gibraltar: Why an Apart Hotel Gives You More Than a Room, and When It Does Not
Last checked
Full kitchens, a door between you and the children, and a washing machine. What an apart hotel changes against a hotel room in Gibraltar, and the three trips where a hotel is the better answer.
A family of four eating three meals a day out in Gibraltar can spend more on food in a week than on the room. That is the whole argument for a kitchen, and it is the one line the hotel comparison sites never put in the table.
Our own figure, from guest feedback and local menu prices, is 120 to 180 GBP a day for a family of four eating out three times. Over seven days that is 840 to 1,260 GBP. We are flagging that as our estimate rather than dressing it up as research, because nobody publishes a verified number for it and we would rather you knew where ours came from.
Victory Suites on Devils Tower Road is an apart hotel: 100+ serviced suites that pair hotel services with apartment living. GBC reported the opening on 27 March 2026, when the Chief Minister inaugurated the building, and noted one bedroom apartments, two bedroom suites, a gym, a business lounge and an indoor pool. Here is what that actually changes, and where the comparison is less flattering than the brochure.
The kitchen is the only difference that pays for itself
Every suite has a full kitchen, not a kitchenette with a microwave and a bar fridge. Full size fridge freezer, four ring hob, oven, dishwasher, washing machine, granite worktops, and the pots, pans, plates, cutlery and knives to actually cook with.
In a hotel, eating means restaurants three times a day at Gibraltar prices. In an apart hotel you choose. Cook eggs and toast in the suite for a couple of pounds. Pack a picnic for the Upper Rock. Eat out when you want to rather than because the alternative is a vending machine.
Groceries are genuinely easy here, which is the part people underestimate. Hungry Monkey and Eroski are minutes away, there is a restaurant downstairs, and routine passport checks at the land crossing into Spain ended on 15 July 2026, so the Spanish supermarkets are a ten minute walk rather than a queue. What that treaty does and does not do is set out in our treaty three months on post.
The washing machine is the unglamorous one that changes your packing. Hotel laundry runs roughly 3 to 5 GBP an item, so a week of a family's clothes is a bill of its own. A load before dinner, hung up before bed, and you travel with one less bag.
Space, and the ability to close a door
A standard hotel room in Gibraltar runs about 18 to 22 square metres: bed, desk, wardrobe, bathroom. Two adults in that for a week feel it by day three. Add children and it becomes a negotiation about who gets the bathroom and where the suitcases live.
| What you need | Standard hotel room | Apart hotel suite |
|---|---|---|
| Floor area | About 18 to 22 square metres | 21 to 63.2 square metres depending on type |
| Cooking | Kettle, sometimes a microwave | Full kitchen, oven, hob, dishwasher |
| Laundry | Paid service, roughly 3 to 5 GBP an item | Washing machine in the suite |
| Separate living space | No | From the Executive Studio upward |
| Bedroom behind a door | No | One and two bedroom suites |
| Balcony | Rarely | Many apartments |
| Workspace | Desk in the bedroom | Dining table, plus a business lounge in the building |
Our four suite types, with the measured ranges. The Studio is 21 to 26 square metres: the same kitchen, smart TV and bathroom as the rest, laid out open plan, and the right answer for a solo traveller or a couple on a short stay who will be out all day.
The Executive Studio is 32 to 37.5 square metres and is the one we would pick for a week. Half again the floor area of a Studio, with a sofa, a coffee table and a dining space that make the room feel like somewhere you live rather than somewhere you sleep. It is also the most common type in the building.
The One Bedroom Suite is 39.8 to 43.7 square metres and buys the thing people actually want, which is a door. One person sleeps while the other works, reads or watches something. The living area is a proper room with a sofa, a dining table and the full kitchen.
The Two Bedroom Suite is 44.8 to 63.2 square metres. At the top of that range it is a flat rather than a room: two bedrooms, a living room, a dining area and a kitchen. Families get separate sleeping spaces, groups get privacy, and three generations get a shared living room with their own doors to shut.
One practical note from the team. The first shop is the one that decides whether the kitchen gets used, and people routinely arrive at nine at night with nothing in the fridge and then eat out for the whole trip. Either order the grocery delivery before you fly or plan the first shop into the arrival day rather than the morning after. It takes twenty minutes and it is the difference between the figures above being real and being a line in a brochure.
Where the apart hotel is the wrong answer
This is the section a brochure leaves out, and it is the reason to trust the rest of the page.
If you want daily housekeeping and a cooked breakfast handed to you, a hotel does that better and we are not going to pretend otherwise. An apart hotel assumes you want to run your own day. If the appeal of a holiday is that somebody else makes decisions about meals, book a hotel.
If you are here for one night between flights, the kitchen is dead weight. You will not cook, and you are paying for a room you barely use. For a single night near the airport the honest comparison is on price and distance, not on appliances.
And if you have never cooked on holiday and do not intend to start, the saving is theoretical. The kitchen only pays for itself if you use it. Roughly half the money in the figures above is unlocked by shopping once and cooking breakfast.
The pool, the gym and the straight answer on what is included
There is no restaurant, no bar, no room service and no breakfast, and there is no parking on site. There is an indoor pool, which matters more than it sounds in a territory where the annual mean is 18.8 degrees Celsius but January evenings are cool, and a gym with cardio machines, weights and resistance kit. There is a business lounge set up as a proper co working space for calls and meetings.
The pool is not included in the nightly rate: it needs a pool pass, £20 for the whole stay or £10 a day. The gym is for guests to book by reservation. What is included with your rate is set out when you book, it varies by rate and length of stay, and the booking page is the authoritative answer rather than this page. If something matters to your trip, confirm it before you pay.
Self check in, and the team behind it
There is no front desk and no concierge desk. Check in is self service, and the team answers on WhatsApp, by phone and by email, so help with directions, taxis or the nearest supermarket is a message away rather than a queue. The most useful thing you can do is stop at a supermarket on the way in, because that is what makes the kitchen worth having on day one rather than day two.
The difference shows up when something goes wrong. A missed flight, a booking that evaporated, a chemist run at an awkward hour. Having a local number that answers is worth more than a lobby.
Devils Tower Road, honestly described
The building is on Devils Tower Road, three minutes from Gibraltar International Airport and about ten minutes on foot from the Spanish frontier. Eastern Beach, the largest sandy beach in the territory, is walking distance. Main Street, Casemates Square and the marinas at Ocean Village and Queensway Quay are a short walk or a short taxi.
Two things to know before you picture the view. The cable car is not running: it closed on 18 November 2025 and the Nature Reserve expects it back in 2027 after a full rebuild, so reaching the top of the Rock means walking or an official taxi tour. Our cable car status guide has the routes and the reserve entry fee. And being three minutes from a runway means you are three minutes from a runway. Gibraltar's traffic is light by international standards and the road closes when an aircraft moves, which is a curiosity on day one and a thing to plan around if you are catching a flight at a tight hour.
Who it is actually for
Families, because children need space, kitchens save real money and a washing machine saves the packing. Couples on stays of five nights or more, where the floor area starts to matter. Business travellers, who get a living area to take a call in without a bed in the shot and a lounge to work in: our business and leisure accommodation guide goes into that. Remote workers on longer stays, covered in our remote working guide.
Not for: one night stopovers, anyone who wants full board, and anyone who would rather not think about groceries at all.
On availability, which is the question we get asked most and the one no comparison site answers. From our own booking pattern the weeks that fill first are the run up to National Day in September and the UK bank holiday weekends, and midweek in November and February is where the real space is. That is our data rather than a market statistic, and it moves year to year, so treat it as a steer and ask us for the dates you actually want.
The bottom line
A hotel room gives you somewhere to sleep. An apart hotel gives you somewhere to live, and the gap is mostly a kitchen, a door and a washing machine. On a three night trip that gap is small. On a ten night trip with children it is the difference between a holiday and an endurance event.
Gibraltar is 6.8 square kilometres with 37,936 residents at the 2022 census, which is why everything above is measured in ten minute walks rather than transfers. What a month here actually costs, built from our own invoices, is in our monthly cost breakdown.

Frequently asked questions
What is an apart hotel and how is it different from a hotel?
An apart hotel pairs hotel style services with fully equipped apartments. Every suite at Victory Suites has a full kitchen with a dishwasher and washing machine and a smart TV, check in is self service, and the team answers on WhatsApp, by phone and by email. The trade is in the other direction too: an apart hotel assumes you want to run your own day rather than be served a cooked breakfast.
What suite sizes are available at Victory Suites Gibraltar?
Four types. Studios are 21 to 26 square metres, Executive Studios 32 to 37.5, One Bedroom Suites 39.8 to 43.7 and Two Bedroom Suites 44.8 to 63.2. Every suite has a full kitchen and a smart TV whatever the size. For a stay of a week or more the Executive Studio is the one we would pick.
Does Victory Suites serve breakfast or have a front desk?
No to both. There is no restaurant, bar, room service or breakfast, and check in is self service with a door code sent before arrival. Every apartment has a full kitchen, and the team answers on WhatsApp, by phone and by email.
Are the pool and the gym included in the rate?
The gym is for Victory Suites guests to book by reservation. The indoor pool needs a pool pass, £20 for the whole stay or £10 a day, bought and booked through your guest portal. There is also a business lounge. If a facility matters to your trip, confirm it before you pay.
Does an apart hotel actually work out cheaper than a hotel in Gibraltar?
Only if you use the kitchen. Our own estimate is that a family of four eating out three times a day spends 120 to 180 GBP daily on food, so shopping once and cooking breakfast unlocks roughly half of that. The nightly rate is often comparable to a standard hotel room. If you have no intention of cooking, the saving is theoretical and the comparison comes down to space.
When did Victory Suites open?
GBC reported the opening on 27 March 2026, when Chief Minister Fabian Picardo inaugurated the building on Devils Tower Road. Published room counts for the building differ between sources, so we quote the figure we stand behind, which is 100+ serviced suites, rather than repeating a number we cannot confirm.
Can I still take the cable car up the Rock while staying here?
No. The cable car closed on 18 November 2025 for a full rebuild and the Nature Reserve expects it to reopen in 2027. The Upper Rock Nature Reserve stays open throughout, so the caves, tunnels, Skywalk and macaques are reachable on foot or by official taxi tour. Budget for Upper Rock Nature Reserve entry, around 30 GBP for an adult.
Where is Victory Suites and how close is the airport?
On Devils Tower Road, three minutes from Gibraltar International Airport and about ten minutes on foot from the Spanish frontier. Eastern Beach is walking distance, and Main Street, Casemates Square and the Ocean Village and Queensway Quay marinas are a short walk or taxi. Being that close to the runway also means the road closes when an aircraft moves.
