Hotel Near Gibraltar Airport: Where to Stay and How Far

Last checked

The closest beds to Gibraltar airport are on Devil's Tower Road, 1 km from the terminal. Walking times, taxi fares, the runway crossing and late arrivals.

The closest places to stay to Gibraltar International Airport are on Devil's Tower Road, about a kilometre south of the terminal. Victory Suites, at 9 Devil's Tower Road, is roughly 1 km from the terminal doors on foot, around 14 minutes at an ordinary walking pace, and about 2 km by road, a few minutes in a taxi, with the Holiday Inn Express a little further along the same road.

That is geography rather than a sales line. Gibraltar is 6.7 square kilometres, and its airport sits on the flat isthmus between the town and the Spanish frontier, so almost everywhere is close to the runway. What actually differs between places to stay is which side of the runway they are on, how you get your bags across it, and what happens when your flight lands late at night or leaves first thing in the morning. Every distance below was measured and every rule is sourced, because much of what is written about this airport predates the changes of 2023 and 2026.

An airport with a road through the middle

Gibraltar's single runway runs right across the isthmus, from the Bay of Gibraltar on one side to the Mediterranean on the other, and Winston Churchill Avenue, the main road between the frontier and the town, crosses it at right angles. For decades every car, bus and lorry entering Gibraltar drove over the runway, and the traffic stopped whenever an aircraft landed or took off.

For vehicles, that ended at one minute past midnight on 31 March 2023, when the Kingsway tunnel under the eastern end of the runway opened. Cars, vans, motorcycles and lorries now have to use it, and it connects with Devil's Tower Road and the East Gate roundabout on the town side. The Government's inauguration notice has the background.

People on foot were left on the surface. Pedestrians, cyclists and scooter riders still cross the runway on Winston Churchill Avenue, and the airport's runway crossing page asks you to follow police directions and wait at the barrier when the lights are red. There is also a pedestrian subway, reached by a footbridge on the Eastern Beach side. If an aircraft is moving you wait a few minutes. If not, you simply walk across an international runway with your suitcase, which is still one of the stranger ways to arrive anywhere.

On foot you cross the runway. In a car you go under it. That is why the walk to Devil's Tower Road is shorter than the drive.

The frontier is next door, and it changed in July 2026

The terminal sits beside the land frontier with Spain. On 15 July 2026, under the treaty between the UK and the EU, immigration controls on people crossing that frontier by land stopped, and you now walk or drive between Gibraltar and La Línea de la Concepción without a passport check. Gibraltar is still a British Overseas Territory, and it remains outside both the EU and the Schengen Area. Our explainer on what changed at the border has the detail.

The checks did not vanish. They moved to the airport. Arriving passengers now pass both Gibraltar and Schengen immigration controls, and under Technical Notice 562/2026 the Schengen check uses electronic gates, with officers checking passports by hand when the gates are not working and for children under 12. No official queue time has been published, and the first weeks brought reported problems with the gates, so build some slack into anything time critical on the day you land.

The upshot is a reversal of how Gibraltar worked for forty years. Arriving by air is now the slower way in, and walking in from Spain is the quicker one. If you are weighing a flight to Gibraltar against flying to Malaga and driving down, our guide to getting to Gibraltar compares every route.

Distances from the terminal, measured

We measured walking and driving routes from the terminal entrance using OpenStreetMap routing data, at an ordinary walking pace of about 4.5 km an hour. On the town side the driving distance is often longer than the walking one, because cars loop through the Kingsway tunnel while people on foot go straight over the runway. Walking times assume no wait at the barrier.

From the terminal toOn footBy road
Victory Suites, 9 Devil's Tower Road1.0 km, about 14 minutes2.1 km
Holiday Inn Express, 21 to 23 Devil's Tower Road1.2 km, about 16 minutes2.0 km

Atlantic Suites, Europort2.2 km, about 29 minutes3.7 km
Europa Point, the southern tip5.8 km, about 78 minutes6.0 km

Two caveats. Walking with two large suitcases is slower than these figures, and the pavement along Winston Churchill Avenue is busy at commuter times. And Gibraltar's road distances are so short that traffic, not distance, decides how long a taxi takes.

By taxi

There is a taxi stand outside the terminal, and the Gibraltar Taxi Association runs a 24 hour radio taxi service on +350 200 70027, according to the airport's page on getting to and from the airport.

Fares are set in law. The Taxi Fares Regulations 2022, in force since 30 June 2022, fix a £3.00 flag down and £0.10 for each unit of 60 metres or 15 seconds, plus a £2.00 airport surcharge, £0.50 for each piece of luggage larger than hand luggage, and extras at night, at weekends and on public holidays. On our arithmetic, the 2.1 km road trip from the terminal to Victory Suites comes to roughly £9 to £11 in the daytime with two suitcases. The meter decides, not us.

Ride hailing is not an option. The Government said in August 2026 that Uber no longer offers trips ending in Gibraltar, and only vehicles licensed in Gibraltar may carry paying passengers.

By bus

Citibus routes X5 and 5 and 10 start at the Frontier terminus beside the airport, run through the Kingsway tunnel and then along Devil's Tower Road, with a stop named for St Teresa's Church and the Holiday Inn Express a minute or two from Victory Suites. The route list has every stop, and an adult single is £1.80, a child £1.50. With heavy bags it is hardly worth it for one kilometre. It earns its place later in the stay, for getting into town or out to the beaches on the east side.

Early flights

Gibraltar's timetable is small. The airport lists two airlines, British Airways and easyJet, flying to Birmingham, Bristol, London Gatwick, London Heathrow and Manchester, so there are only a handful of departures a day. Check in normally opens two hours before scheduled departure, and the airport says it does not open earlier when a flight is delayed.

From Devil's Tower Road the sum is simple: a 14 minute walk or a short taxi ride, plus whatever the new controls take, which nobody has published an average for. Until those controls have a track record we would leave about two hours before departure. That is still a lie in compared with any airport where the terminal is a motorway drive away.

Check out at Victory Suites is 11am and it is firm, because the door code stops working at that time. If your flight leaves in the evening, the team can hold luggage on weekdays between 9am and 4.30pm, and a later check out can sometimes be arranged for a fee if the apartment is not needed. Ask before you book if a weekend departure makes that matter.

Late arrivals

This is where location and the way you check in matter more than anything else. A flight that lands late, or a diversion that brings you back by coach from Malaga close to midnight, is only a problem if somebody has to be awake to hand you a key.

Victory Suites runs on self check in. Check in is from 3pm, and once your booking details, ID and payment are complete, your door code is released on the day of arrival. You can walk in at one in the morning without waking anyone, because there is no front desk to find closed. The team answers on WhatsApp if something does not work. Quiet hours in the building run from 10pm to 9am, which is worth remembering when you are wheeling a case down the corridor at midnight.

Early arrivals have the opposite problem: you land in the morning and the apartment is not ready until three. On weekdays the team can hold your bags from 9am, and early check in can be arranged for a fee when the apartment is ready. Eastern Beach is under a quarter of an hour on foot from the building if you would rather wait in the sun.

When the flight does not happen

Gibraltar's runway is short, exposed to the wind and sits beside a 426 metre rock. In strong winds flights are sometimes diverted to Malaga, and the airline then usually brings passengers on by coach. When a flight home is cancelled, your airline owes you care, including a room overnight, whatever the cause.

We have written the full guide on what to do when your Gibraltar flight is cancelled: your rights under UK261, what to do in the first hour, and how to book your own room and claim the cost back when the airline cannot find you one. The location point is simpler. When the departures board turns red, the people staying a kilometre from the terminal can be back in their own apartment before the rebooking queue has moved, and for a stay that suddenly runs to three more nights, a kitchen and a washing machine matter far more than they did when you booked.

Driving in from Spain, and parking

If you arrive by car rather than by plane, you come through the Kingsway tunnel, which brings frontier traffic out by Devil's Tower Road, so the east side is the first part of Gibraltar you reach. Victory Suites has no parking of its own. Guests use the Devil's Tower Road car park nearby, on its first floor, paid by QR code. Our guide to parking in Gibraltar covers costs and the option of leaving the car in La Línea.

Should you sleep in Spain instead?

Since the frontier checks went, a hotel in La Línea de la Concepción is a real option, and the town starts on the far side of the frontier, a few minutes from the terminal. The trade offs are euros rather than pounds, and a walk across the frontier with your bags at each end of the trip. For a single night before an early flight it can make sense. For anything longer, most visitors want to be on the Gibraltar side, near the Rock, the beaches and the town. Our guide to where to stay in Gibraltar weighs Gibraltar against La Línea in more detail.

Who an airport base suits

Anyone on the first or last flight of the day. Anyone flying in for a short contract or a few days of meetings who does not want to start each day in a taxi. Crews, contractors and engineers working around the airport and the east side. Families who want the shortest possible journey between the aircraft door and a bed. And anyone splitting a trip between Gibraltar and Andalusia, because the east side sits between the runway, the frontier and the town.

Where Victory Suites fits

Victory Suites is an aparthotel of 100+ apartments at 9 Devil's Tower Road, from studios to two bedroom apartments, each with a full kitchen, a washer dryer, air conditioning and fast WiFi, and every booking runs on self check in. It is about 14 minutes' walk from the terminal, 11 minutes from Casemates Square and under a quarter of an hour from Eastern Beach. If you are weighing an apartment against a hotel room, our guide to serviced apartments and aparthotels in Gibraltar sets out the differences honestly.

It will not suit everyone. There is no parking in the building and no desk staffed through the night, by design. If you want a hotel with a reception staffed around the clock, the hotels in town will suit you better. If you want to land, walk to your own front door and put the kettle on, very few places on the Rock let you do it from closer. Check dates and book direct at victorysuites.gi, and if your flight times are awkward, message us before you book and we will tell you honestly how the arrival will work.

Measured on OpenStreetMap routing, Devil's Tower Road is about 14 to 16 minutes from the terminal, Casemates Square about 19 minutes and Ocean Village about 21 minutes. Europa Point, at the southern tip, is over an hour on foot.

Which hotel is closest to Gibraltar airport?

Do I go through passport control at Gibraltar airport now that the border is open?

Yes, twice. Since 15 July 2026 there are no immigration controls on the land frontier with Spain, but arriving air passengers pass both Gibraltar and Schengen immigration controls at the airport. The Schengen check uses electronic gates, with officers checking by hand when the gates are down and for children under 12. No official queue time has been published, so allow extra time.
