Sean Connery Married in Gibraltar Twice. The First One Is the Better Story
Last checked
The 1975 wedding gets the attention. The 1962 one is the one where the retelling collapses, and the 2026 paperwork has quietly changed too.
Sean Connery married in Gibraltar twice, in 1962 and again in 1975, and the wedding nobody writes about is the first one.
The 1975 ceremony with the painter Micheline Roquebrune is the one that gets listed. It sits on every roundup of famous weddings on the Rock, usually with the date 6 May attached to it. The 1962 wedding to the Australian actress Diane Cilento gets a clause, if it gets anything. That is the wrong way round, because the 1962 one is the better story and it is the one where the version you will read elsewhere falls apart on contact with a calendar.
We went looking for what can actually be documented, and then we went to the Department of Immigration and Home Affairs to find out what a couple doing the same thing this month would face. Both halves turned up something worth knowing.
The 1962 wedding, and the film that was not being made
Connery married Diane Cilento in Gibraltar in November 1962. Biography records it as a secret ceremony on the Rock that month. Wikipedia's account gives the years, 1962 to 1973, and the separation in 1971, without naming the place.
Here is where the retelling goes wrong. The widely repeated version, including Biography's own entry, says he married Cilento while he was filming From Russia with Love. He cannot have. Principal photography on that film began on 1 April 1963 at Pinewood, four months after the wedding, and wrapped on 23 August 1963. In November 1962 there was no Bond film in production at all.
What there was, was a hit. Dr. No had its premiere at the London Pavilion on 5 October 1962 and went out across the rest of the United Kingdom three days later. So Connery married in Gibraltar roughly six weeks into being famous, at the exact moment the first Bond film was turning a jobbing Scottish actor into something else. That is a better fact than the one everybody prints, and it is checkable.
Gibraltar has kept its own Bond connections since, including the Living Daylights locations you can still walk to. None of them involve the registrar.
1975, and the date everyone repeats that nobody sources
The second wedding is the famous one. Connery married Micheline Roquebrune, a French Moroccan painter he had met at a golf tournament in Morocco in 1970, and the marriage lasted until his death on 31 October 2020.
The year and the place hold up across sources. The precise date does not. Wedding industry pages and fan sites give 6 May 1975 with confidence, and we could not find it in a primary record, a contemporary newspaper report or any established reference work. Wikipedia gives 1975 and no day. Newsweek gives 1975 and no day. The same pages that supply the 6 May date also, in places, call Roquebrune his third wife. She was his second.
So we will not print 6 May as a fact. The year is 1975, the place was Gibraltar, and if you want the day you will need the register entry, which the Department of Immigration and Home Affairs holds and will search for a fee.
Two Connery weddings, more than a decade apart, both in the same small territory, and the most repeated detail about either of them is one we cannot verify.
Why the Rock keeps getting the quiet weddings
The reason is a single clause of statute. Under section 13 of the Marriage Act, a Special Licence can be granted that lets residents and non residents alike marry in Gibraltar, with no residency period to serve first. That is why John Lennon and Yoko Ono landed, married and left inside a morning in March 1969 after French rules had told them to wait weeks. It is why Connery could do it twice without arranging his life around it. The Ballad of John and Yoko put the arrangement into the charts, and the song still carries the line about getting married in Gibraltar near Spain.
There is one condition, and it is the operator's part of this story. A non resident couple must prove to the Registrar that they are spending at least one night in Gibraltar, immediately before or immediately after the ceremony. A minimum one night stay is required by law.
The August 2026 guidance notes spell out what counts as proof, and the wording changed. It now reads: a Gibraltar hotel bill or Gibraltar apartment booking. The February 2025 version asked for a hotel bill or hotel booking form. An apartment booking confirmation is now named in the government's own document as acceptable evidence, which is worth knowing before anyone books a room they do not want purely to satisfy a registrar.
Whatever you use, the proof has to carry the name and address of the host, a telephone number and email, the names of the guests, the address of the stay, the length of the stay and the total paid.
What it costs in 2026, and what it cost eighteen months ago
Fees went up in August 2026. We compared the two published fee tables line by line, because nobody else appears to have done it and every price you will find on other Gibraltar wedding pages is the old one or older.
| Official fee | February 2025 | August 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Special Licence for marriage or civil partnership | £117.50 | £124.00 |
| Ceremony at the Registry Office | £176.50 | £186.50 |
| Ceremony at an outside venue, after hours or Saturday | £293.50 | £309.50 |
| Marriage certificate, each | £35.00 | £37.00 |
| Confirmation letter issued on the day | £18.00 | £19.00 |
| Postage to an address outside Gibraltar | £18.00 | £19.00 |
| Apostille on the certificate, each | £35.00 | £37.00 |
| Change of date | £50.00 | £53.00 |
The floor for a non resident couple is therefore £310.50: the Special Licence at £124.00 plus the ceremony at £186.50. Add one certificate and you are at £347.50. Add the same day confirmation letter and postage home and you are at £385.50. That is the legal bill, before a photographer, a bouquet, a planner or a meal.
The Parlour is the exception worth asking about. In February 2025 it was a single £517.50, of which £165 went to Gibraltar Cultural Services. The August 2026 table lists £372.00 and says only that a separate fee will be incurred by Cultural Services, without saying how much. Ask before you book.
Every fee is non refundable and non transferable in all circumstances, including if your documents turn out to be wrong, if you are refused entry at the border, or if the Registrar is unable to perform the ceremony on the day. Ceremonies can now be booked online, which the February 2025 process did not allow.
Where the ceremony happens now, and why half the internet is out of date
This is the part that catches people. Ceremonies are not held in a registry office in the ordinary sense. They are currently conducted in the Mario Finlayson Gallery on the ground floor of the City Hall in John Mackintosh Square, weekdays from 10:00 to 14:30 Monday to Thursday and 10:00 to 14:00 on Friday.
The Gallery holds 30 people. That count includes the registrar, the couple and the two witnesses, so the real guest list is 26. The City Hall Parlour, bookable between 11:00 and 13:00, holds 80 and carries its own venue fee.
The building itself was put up in the early nineteenth century as a private house for Aaron Cardozo, a merchant, then spent time as a hotel before becoming public property. The Gallery was opened in June 2015 and hangs work by six Gibraltarian painters, among them Gustavo Bacarisas and Mario Finlayson himself. You are married surrounded by them.
Practical details that are easy to miss. You and your witnesses must arrive at least 15 minutes early, and a delay of more than 10 minutes can push your ceremony to whenever the registrar is next free. Each couple gets 30 minutes in total for the preliminaries and the ceremony. No food, drink or animals inside the City Hall, assistance dogs excepted, and no confetti or rice indoors. There is no parking at the City Hall at all; the nearest paid on street parking is at Queensway and the International Commercial Centre.
Witnesses are your problem. Two are required, both over 18, both able to speak and understand English, and the office states plainly that it does not provide them and its staff cannot act as them.
The visa rule that changed on 15 July 2026
If you are not a Gibraltar resident and you are not visa exempt, the route changed completely. The old advice was to apply for a Gibraltar visa through a visa application centre. The August 2026 notes now say you may require a Schengen visa, applied for at the Spanish consulate in the country where you live, requesting destination Gibraltar for marriage purposes.
That follows the wider change of 15 July 2026, when Gibraltar's visa framework was rebuilt and the old exemptions based on holding a UK visa were abolished. We set out what that did to ordinary crossings in our guide to the border changes. For weddings the practical effect is blunt: a booking confirmation does not entitle anyone to enter, the fees are not refunded if entry is refused, and the department's marriages page is where to check before paying anything.
Two contact points are worth having. Marriage enquiries go to the Department of Immigration and Home Affairs on +350 20078303, open 08:00 to 15:30 Monday to Thursday and 08:00 to 15:00 on Friday. Visa questions go to the immigration section by email. Note that the guidance notes themselves link to a government page on bank and public holidays that now returns a 404, so ring rather than rely on it.
How many people actually do this
The government has not published a current annual count. The most recent figures we could verify come from the Abstract of Statistics 2016, sourced to the Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages, and they are startling for a territory of 37,936 people at the 2022 census.
In 2016 Gibraltar recorded 199 marriages where at least one partner was resident and 1,249 where neither was. That is 1,448 in a year, 86 per cent of them couples who had flown in. In 2015 the same split was 195 and 1,098.
The monthly pattern is the useful part, and it is not what most people assume. The busiest month for visiting couples in 2016 was September, with 154 weddings, ahead of October at 132 and June at 131. December was the quietest by a distance at 48. If you want a registrar slot and a room in the same week, September is the month to book early and January is the month nobody is competing for. Note also that no ceremonies take place during Easter week or the week before Christmas, and none on public holidays.
Figures circulate elsewhere putting the current total nearer 1,700 a year. We could not open the source, so we are not repeating the number as fact.
What we could not find out
Three things, stated plainly. We could not confirm the exact day of the Connery and Roquebrune wedding in 1975. We could not confirm the exact day in November 1962 for the Cilento wedding, where sources offer 29 November and 6 December. And we could not find any current official statement of how many marriages Gibraltar registers each year, because the published statistical abstracts stop at 2016.
If you need the 1962 or 1975 register entries, they exist. A general search of the marriage indexes is a chargeable service at the Department of Immigration and Home Affairs, and that is the only place an answer is going to come from.
For the rest of the process, the Gibraltar Tourist Board's page and the guidance notes above are the two documents to read, in that order, before you spend anything.
If you are the one getting married
The one night stay is a legal requirement, not a suggestion, and your booking confirmation is the document the Registrar asks for. Victory Suites runs 100+ apartments on Devils Tower Road, a ten minute walk from Grand Casemates Square with the City Hall about five minutes further down Main Street, and a confirmed apartment booking is exactly the proof of stay the August 2026 guidance names. Message us directly and we will make sure the confirmation carries the host name and address, the guest names, the dates and the total paid, in the form the Registrar wants it.
Book the September dates early. Ask us for January if you would rather have the town to yourselves.
Frequently asked questions
Did Sean Connery really get married in Gibraltar?
Twice, according to the published accounts. He married Diane Cilento on the Rock in November 1962 and Micheline Roquebrune in Gibraltar in 1975. Both weddings are recorded by established reference sources, although neither exact date is confirmed by a primary record we could see.
What date did Sean Connery marry Micheline Roquebrune?
The year was 1975 and the place was Gibraltar. The specific date of 6 May circulates widely on wedding and fan sites, but we could not trace it to a primary record, a contemporary report or an established reference work, so we do not print it as fact. The register entry held by the Department of Immigration and Home Affairs would settle it.
Was Connery filming From Russia with Love when he married in 1962?
No, and this is the most repeated error about the wedding. Filming on From Russia with Love began on 1 April 1963 and finished on 23 August 1963. The wedding was in November 1962, about six weeks after Dr. No opened across the United Kingdom on 8 October 1962.
Where do Gibraltar weddings actually take place?
Ceremonies are currently held in the Mario Finlayson Gallery on the ground floor of the City Hall in John Mackintosh Square, from 10:00 to 14:30 Monday to Thursday and 10:00 to 14:00 on Friday. The Gallery holds 30 people including the registrar, the couple and two witnesses. The City Hall Parlour holds 80 and is bookable between 11:00 and 13:00 for a separate fee.
What are the official fees in 2026?
As of August 2026 the Special Licence is £124.00 and a ceremony at the Registry Office is £186.50, so a non resident couple starts at £310.50. A marriage certificate is £37.00 each, a same day confirmation letter £19.00, postage outside Gibraltar £19.00 and an apostille £37.00. All fees are non refundable and non transferable.
Do we have to stay a night in Gibraltar to get married there?
Yes. A minimum one night stay is required by law, immediately before or immediately after the ceremony, and you must give the Registrar documentary proof. The August 2026 guidance names a Gibraltar hotel bill or a Gibraltar apartment booking as acceptable evidence. The proof must show the host name and address, contact details, guest names, address and length of stay and the total paid.
Do we need a visa to marry in Gibraltar now?
If you are not resident and not visa exempt, you may now need a Schengen visa applied for at the Spanish consulate in the country where you live, requesting destination Gibraltar for marriage purposes. This replaced the old Gibraltar visa route after the framework changed on 15 July 2026. A confirmed booking does not entitle anyone to enter, and fees are not refunded if entry is refused.
