Top 10 Hotels in Gibraltar? There Are Six. Every Place You Can Actually Stay

Last checked

Gibraltar's official directory lists six hotels and hostels, not ten. What each one is, who it suits, and why the old version of this page ranked a hotel that shut in 2021.

There are not ten hotels in Gibraltar. Visit Gibraltar's own accommodation directory lists six hotels and hostels, and the Government's 2025 occupancy survey is built on figures from the same six. The version of this page we published in April ranked ten anyway, which meant padding the list, and one of the entries had been closed for four years. This is the honest version: everywhere on the Rock you can actually sleep, what each one is, and who should pick it.

Why this page was wrong, and what we have done about it

The old number five was the Caleta Hotel at Catalan Bay, described as a four star resort with a price range. The Caleta shut on 31 December 2021, and note (x) of the Hotel Occupancy Survey records that it has not been counted since January 2022. Numbers eight and nine were not properties at all but two marina districts where various operators let apartments, which is what padding to a round number looks like. Six hotels do not make a top ten, so this page no longer pretends they do.

The second problem is us. We run Victory Suites, and the old page put us at number one in a ranking we wrote ourselves, which is worth exactly nothing to a reader. So there is no ranking here. Properties appear in the order the market sorts them, from the biggest to the smallest, we do not quote nightly rates for anyone else's rooms, and where we are the right answer we say why, along with when we are not.

What actually exists

Six hotels and hostels, sixteen self catering units in the directory, and nothing else. Those six offered 214,000 room nights in 2025, which works out at about 586 rooms available on an average night for the whole territory. Room occupancy across them ran at 70.1 per cent for the year, up from 65.2 per cent in 2024, so the market is tightening while the supply stays flat.

The Sunborn

The Sunborn is a permanently moored vessel at Ocean Village rather than a building, and it was the first hotel in Gibraltar to be rated five star. Reported figures put it at about 189 rooms and roughly 142 metres long, though sources differ by a few either way, which is a reasonable warning about how firm any number for a Gibraltar hotel is. It is the only place here where the room itself is the reason for the trip. The trade off is that a yacht has a yacht's dimensions: the Sunborn's cabins are compact, and the Sunborn's pool is outdoors and seasonal.

The Rock Hotel

The oldest thing on the list and the most interesting. It began operation in 1932, built by John Crichton Stuart, the 4th Marquess of Bute, and the Bland Group has run it since 1959. Sarah Churchill married there in April 1962, and Sean Connery stayed after his Gibraltar wedding the same year. It sits on Europa Road above the town, in a landscaped garden of about 3.6 hectares, looking over the Botanic Gardens and the bay.

One correction worth making, because the old version of this page made the mistake. Being near the cable car base station is not currently a selling point: the cable car has not carried a passenger since 18 November 2025 and the Nature Reserve says it is undergoing full refurbishment and is expected to reopen in 2027. The Rock Hotel's position is still a genuine advantage if you want quiet and a view, and it is still a walk uphill from Main Street with luggage.

O'Callaghan Eliott

The O'Callaghan Eliott is the most conventionally useful hotel in Gibraltar, in the sense that it is a full service hotel in the middle of the old town with its own rooftop pool and meeting space. If your trip involves Main Street, Casemates Square and a meeting, the Eliott puts all three within a few minutes on foot and nothing else does. The Eliott's rooftop pool is outdoors, so it is a summer amenity rather than a year round one, which is the common pattern here. Victory Suites has an indoor pool instead.

Holiday Inn Express

On Devils Tower Road, a few minutes from the airport and the frontier, and the most predictable room in the territory. You know exactly what you are getting, which for a one night stop before an early flight is the whole point. For anything longer the lack of a kitchen starts to tell, because Gibraltar restaurant prices are not a rounding error on a week's trip.

The Bristol

Central, long established and the budget end of the hotel market here, in an older building off Main Street behind the cathedral. It is the right answer for a traveller who wants a bed in the centre and does not care about amenities, and the wrong one for anybody who does. We are not going to dress that up.

The Emile Youth Hostel

Gibraltar's only hostel, inside a converted bastion, with dormitory beds and some private rooms. It is worth knowing that it is a real part of the market rather than a footnote: it appears in Visit Gibraltar's directory and in the Government's occupancy survey alongside the hotels. If you are travelling solo on a tight budget, it is the only option in the territory at its price, and the alternative is sleeping in Spain.

Serviced apartments, ours included

This is the category the old page handled worst, by listing two marinas as though they were hotels. What actually exists is sixteen self catering listings in the official directory, run by different operators to different standards, plus purpose built apart hotels of which we are one.

Victory Suites is on Devils Tower Road: 100+ apartments from studios to two bedroom, each with its own kitchen, washing machine and smart TV, in a building with an indoor pool and a gym. The Victory Suites pool needs a pool pass, £20 for the whole stay or £10 a day, and the gym is for guests to book by reservation. It is an apart hotel, not a full service hotel. Victory Suites does not serve breakfast and has no restaurant, bar or room service: every apartment has a full kitchen instead, and Risso's Daily supermarket is on the same road. Check in at Victory Suites is self service from 3pm with a door code, there is no front desk, and the team answers on WhatsApp, by phone and by email. There is no parking on site; guests use the public car park on Devil's Tower Road. The airport is seven minutes away on foot. We are listed across 300+ booking channels if you would rather book where you already have an account.

Here is the honest boundary. Below three nights, a hotel room usually wins: it is cheaper, and a kitchen you do not cook in is dead weight. At three nights and above, which the occupancy survey now puts at the territory's average stay of 3.4 nights, the kitchen and the laundry change the total cost more than the nightly rate does. That is the case for us, and it is the only case we will make.

If you are booking one of the sixteen apartments

The self catering listings are the part of this market where quality varies most, because they are run by different people to different standards and a photograph tells you nothing about any of it. Four questions settle most of it. Who actually operates the flat, a company or an individual, and is there someone to call at nine at night. Is check in in person or a key box, because a key box and a flight delay is how people end up sitting on a suitcase. Is there a washing machine in the flat or a shared laundry. And is the building residential, which decides whether you are sharing a lift with people going to work at seven. None of those are unreasonable questions and any operator worth booking will answer them in a sentence.

Arriving by car, which changes the answer

If you are driving in from Spain, parking is the thing that quietly decides where you should stay. Gibraltar is small and its central streets are narrow and mostly one way, and a hotel in the middle of the old town may have no parking of its own at all. Properties on Devils Tower Road, on the flat northern side, are the first addresses you reach after the frontier and the easiest to park at. Our guide to parking in Gibraltar covers the line colours and the real prices, and it is worth ten minutes before you book anything if you are bringing a car.

What is not on the list, and why

The Caleta, for the reason above. A five star hotel has been proposed for its site, and the Gibraltar Chronicle reported in August 2023 that revised designs had been filed with the Town Planner after conditional outline permission, but nothing has opened and no opening date has been published. Also absent: any property on the Spanish side of the frontier. La Línea has plenty of them, they are cheaper, and since the routine frontier checks were removed in July 2026 the case for them is stronger than it was. We cover that trade off properly in our guide to where to stay.

How to actually choose

Decide the length of stay first, because it settles the category, and the month second, because it settles whether you have a choice at all. September is the hardest month to book here and December the easiest, which is the reverse of what most guides say, and our month by month breakdown has the numbers. Then pick on the one thing you actually care about: location on foot, an indoor pool you can use in February, a kitchen, a price, or a room that is itself the story.

Getting here

The airport's own flight information currently shows scheduled services to London Heathrow, London Gatwick and Manchester, flown by British Airways and easyJet, and its news pages mention a new Birmingham route. Routes here change more often than most destinations, so check the live board rather than a list on a blog, including this one. Inside the territory you walk. Most of what is on this page is within half an hour on foot of the rest of it, which is the one genuine advantage of a market this small.

The bottom line

Six hotels, one hostel among them, sixteen self catering listings and about 586 rooms a night. It is a small market that gets described as a larger one because ten entries make a better headline than six. For a night or two, take the Holiday Inn Express near the airport or the Bristol in the centre and keep it simple. For character, the Rock Hotel. For an occasion, the Sunborn. For three nights or more, a serviced apartment, and Victory Suites is built for exactly that. Ask our team what is available on your dates, and treat any page that ranks ten Gibraltar hotels with a confident price for each as a page that has not checked.

Frequently asked questions

How many hotels are there in Gibraltar?

Six hotels and hostels appear in Visit Gibraltar's official accommodation directory: the Sunborn, the Rock Hotel, the O'Callaghan Eliott, the Holiday Inn Express, the Bristol and the Emile Youth Hostel. The Government's 2025 Hotel Occupancy Survey is based on the same six. The directory also lists sixteen self catering units. Lists of ten Gibraltar hotels are padded.

Is the Caleta Hotel still open?

No. It closed on 31 December 2021 and the Government's occupancy survey has excluded it since January 2022. A five star hotel has been proposed for the Catalan Bay site, with revised designs filed in August 2023 after conditional outline permission, but nothing has opened there and no opening date has been published.

Which is the best hotel in Gibraltar?

It depends on the length of stay, and we are not a neutral judge because we operate a serviced apartment building here. For one or two nights, the Holiday Inn Express for airport access or the Bristol for a central budget room. For character, the Rock Hotel. For a special occasion, the Sunborn. For three nights or more, a serviced apartment with a kitchen.

Which hotel in Gibraltar is rated five star?

The Sunborn Gibraltar, a permanently moored yacht at Ocean Village Marina, was the first hotel in the territory to be rated five star. Reported figures put it at about 189 rooms. The Sunborn's cabins are compact by the nature of the vessel, and the Sunborn's pool is outdoors and seasonal.

Does Victory Suites serve breakfast?

No. Victory Suites is an apart hotel on Devils Tower Road with no restaurant, bar, room service or breakfast. Every apartment has a full kitchen, check in is self service from 3pm, and there is no parking on site.

Does any Gibraltar hotel have an indoor pool?

Hotel pools here are mostly seasonal or outdoor: the Eliott's rooftop pool is a summer amenity and the Sunborn's pool is outdoors. Victory Suites, an apart hotel on Devils Tower Road, has an indoor pool for its guests, with a pool pass at £20 for the whole stay or £10 a day. If a winter swim matters, ask before booking anywhere.

How many hotel rooms does Gibraltar have in total?

The six surveyed establishments offered 214,000 room nights in 2025, which is about 586 rooms available on an average night. Room occupancy across them was 70.1 per cent for the year, against 65.2 per cent in 2024, so a small market is filling up faster while the number of rooms stays flat.

Is it better to stay in Gibraltar or La Línea?

La Línea is cheaper per night, and since routine immigration and customs checks at the land frontier were removed in July 2026 the old cost of that saving, a queue every morning, has largely gone. Staying on the Rock still wins for a week, for families, and for any trip where you return to the apartment during the day.
