Weddings in Gibraltar 2026: The Licensed Venues, and Four That Are Not

Last checked

The Registry publishes its approved venue list. Four venues recommended all over the internet are not on it, and one of them has been shut since the cable car closed. Here is the real list.

The Registry publishes the list of venues where a Registrar will actually conduct a ceremony. Compare it against the Gibraltar wedding pages and something awkward turns up: The Mount, the Caleta Hotel, the Bristol Hotel and the Mons Calpe Suite are all recommended widely, including on this site until today, and none of the four appears on it.

The Mons Calpe Suite is the sharpest case. It sits at the cable car's top station, and the cable car closed on 18 November 2025 for a rebuild its operator put at about two years. The venue's own social channel said it had no plans to reopen while the new cable car project is developed, and we could find no evidence it is taking bookings for 2026. If a planner offers it to you, ask them to show you a confirmed Registrar booking before you pay a deposit.

This page is the corrected version. It carries the official list, what each venue is actually good for, and the costs the Registry publishes rather than the ones that have been circulating since 2024.

The venues a Registrar will actually attend

These are the approved outside venues named in the Registry's guidance notes, reissued for September 2026, alongside the two rooms inside the City Hall. There are twenty approved outside venues, not the eleven most pages claim, and the range is wider than the hotel list suggests.

Two things in that table are worth a second look. St Michael's Cave is evening only, which most pages never mention and which decides your whole running order. And Udaya Beach Club on Eastern Beach is the nearest you get to a beach wedding, because a ceremony on the sand itself is not among the approved options.

Victory Suites is not on that list and we are not going to pretend otherwise. It is where the wedding party sleeps, which is a different job, and there is a legal reason that job matters, covered further down.

Which of them to actually pick

The list is long and the real choice is narrower than twenty, because the venues sort into four jobs and most couples only have one of them.

If there are four of you and the point is to be married rather than to throw a wedding, the Mario Finlayson Gallery is the right answer and the 186.50 pound ceremony fee is the whole venue cost. It is a heritage room in the City Hall on John Mackintosh Square, with the Gibraltar Parliament building across the square, and it holds 30. The money you do not spend on a venue goes further on the dinner. The catch is the hours: weekdays only, finished by 14:30 Monday to Thursday and 14:00 on Friday, so it is a lunch wedding whether or not you wanted one.

If you want the photograph that only Gibraltar can give you, St Michael's Cave is the one, and the evening restriction is the reason it works. Ceremonies there run at 19:00 from April to October and 18:00 from November to March, so you are in a lit limestone chamber after dark rather than squinting at a terrace at noon. Plan the whole day backwards from that time, and remember the cave is on the upper Rock, which now means taxis for everyone.

If the guest list is the constraint, the waterfront does the heavy lifting. The marina venues at Ocean Village and Queensway Quay take a sit down meal and a ceremony in the same place, which removes the transfer that eats an hour of any destination wedding. The two rowing clubs on Europort Road are the underrated entries on the list: licensed, on the water, and nobody puts them in a top ten because they are not hotels.

And if you want something outdoors that is not a hotel lawn, the Botanic Gardens carry three separate licensed areas and sit ten minutes from town. The honest warning applies to every open air option here: in rain or high wind the Registrar may be unable to officiate, and you must name an approved indoor alternative in advance or the ceremony does not take place. That is not a weather disclaimer, it is a condition of the booking.

What it costs, from the published schedule

The Registry's current fees are 124.00 pounds for the Special Licence and 186.50 pounds for a ceremony at the Registry Office, or 309.50 pounds at an outside location after working hours or on a Saturday. Certificates are 37.00 pounds each and the guidance advises ordering at least two. The Mayor's Parlour carries a 372.00 pound venue fee with a separate Cultural Services charge on top.

That makes the honest official total 384.50 pounds for a weekday Registry ceremony and 507.50 pounds for a Saturday at an outside venue, before the venue charges you anything. Figures of 117.50 and 176.50 are still everywhere online, including on this page until today. They were correct before the September 2026 reissue and they are not correct now. Our step by step paperwork guide carries the full fee table and the document list.

On planner packages, we will tell you what we can stand behind and no more. Gibraltar planners quote tiers that run from a basic elopement, where you are essentially paying for an officiant booking and the paperwork, up to full destination weddings in five figures. We are not publishing a price grid for them, because those are their quotes and not ours, and the ranges that circulate on wedding pages are not traceable to anybody who will honour them. Ask two planners for written quotes against the same date and guest count, and ask what is excluded.

What we can put a number on is the comparison. Industry surveys put a UK wedding above 20,000 pounds: Bridebook's 2025 report gives an average of 20,822 pounds and Hitched's survey of couples married in 2024 gives 23,250. Those are industry surveys rather than official statistics, and an earlier version of this page credited the figure to the Office for National Statistics, which does not publish it. The point survives the correction. A Gibraltar wedding for twenty guests lands far below either number, and the official element of it is under 400 pounds.

Who can marry here, and on what notice

The Marriage Act provides for the marriage between two persons, and by means of a Special Licence under Section 13 residents and non residents alike can marry in Gibraltar. There is no residency period to serve.

Same sex marriage has been legal here since 15 December 2016, under the Civil Marriage Amendment Act 2016, which Parliament passed on 26 October 2016 and which received assent on 1 November. The Act protects ministers of religion and religious organisations from being compelled to take part, so a civil ceremony is the route and a religious blessing is a separate arrangement that does not replace it.

Ceremonies are booked through the Registry's online calendar, which replaced the old email a form process, and the marriage section now answers at marriages.diha@gibraltar.gov.gi rather than the csro address that most pages still print. The office is the Department of Immigration and Home Affairs, and its own landing page carries the current documents.

One correction to the closure dates. There are no ceremonies during Easter or pre Christmas week, resuming shortly after the New Year, and none on Gibraltar public holidays. The 21 December to 5 January window quoted on many pages, ours included, is not what the guidance says, and the guidance itself tells couples to confirm exact dates with staff.

Choosing the season on real numbers

The Government of Gibraltar gives a January mean of 13.5 degrees and an August mean of 24.3, with about 30 percent of days classified as wet and 10.5 hours of sunshine a day in summer. That is the whole climate case, and it is more useful than the 300 days of sunshine line this page used to carry, which we could not source.

April to June and September to October are the sensible windows for an outdoor ceremony: warm enough to stand outside in formal wear, short of the August peak. July and August give you the best sunset light and the worst midday heat, and the Levanter can cap the Rock in cloud at any point in the warm half of the year. December to March is the quiet season and the cheapest, with indoor venues doing the work. Our month by month guide has the detail.

One planning note that is new this year. With the cable car out of service, any venue on the upper Rock means road transport for every guest, so build taxis into the budget and say so on the invitation. Our cable car status guide tracks the reopening.

Getting the guests here

Gibraltar International Airport flies to five UK airports: Heathrow with British Airways, then Gatwick, Manchester, Bristol and Birmingham with easyJet, as Visit Gibraltar lists them. Guests coming from anywhere else generally fly to Malaga and drive about 90 minutes.

The frontier is no longer the problem it was. Routine passport checks at the land crossing ended on 15 July 2026, and Schengen control moved to Gibraltar's air terminal and port. The flip side is the visa route: a guest who needs a visa now needs a Schengen visa from a Spanish consulate, not a British one, and exemptions based only on a UK visa or UK residence were abolished. Tell affected guests early, because that is a consulate appointment, not a form. Our treaty guide sets out the border side.

The Lennon wedding, accurately

John Lennon and Yoko Ono married in Gibraltar on 20 March 1969, in a ten minute ceremony at the British Consulate conducted by the registrar Cecil Wheeler. They chose the Rock because Lennon was a British citizen and could marry here immediately after a cross channel attempt and a Paris attempt both failed. He called the place quiet, British and friendly.

One detail usually gets mangled, including by us. The Bed In for Peace was not in Paris. They flew on to Paris the same day, and the Bed In ran at the Amsterdam Hilton from 25 March. Accounts also differ on whether the couple spent any nights on the Rock at all, one of them published by a hotel that says they stayed there, and we could not settle that from a source with nothing riding on it. So we are not going to tell you either way.

Where the wedding party sleeps, and why it is legal paperwork

Here is the part of a Gibraltar wedding that nobody treats as paperwork but should. Non residents must prove to the Registrar that they are staying in Gibraltar: a minimum one night stay is required by Law, immediately before or immediately after the ceremony, with evidence handed over no later than the day before. The guidance names a Gibraltar hotel bill or a Gibraltar apartment booking as acceptable proof.

So the booking confirmation is not just logistics, it is a document the Registrar has to be satisfied with. Get it in the couple's own names with the night of the wedding paid for, and that part of the file is closed.

Victory Suites on Devils Tower Road is three minutes from the air terminal, about ten minutes on foot from the frontier and a short taxi from the City Hall and the marina venues. These are apartments rather than hotel rooms: a full kitchen, a separate living area and air conditioning in each, with two bedroom apartments that sleep up to five, which is what a wedding party actually needs when the family arrives on a Wednesday for a Saturday ceremony.

The kitchen and living space are the practical difference. Standard hotel rooms give a wedding party nowhere to gather, get ready together or feed people at odd hours, and a destination wedding runs on exactly those hours. Rates are quoted in pounds.

Victory Suites runs 100+ apartments across the territory and distributes through 300+ booking channels, so there is usually something available even in the weeks that fill, and longer stays price better than short ones, which suits arrivals spread across a week. The team answers on WhatsApp and can point you to taxis, restaurants for the dinner afterwards and grocery delivery.

Frequently asked questions

Which wedding venues are actually licensed in Gibraltar?

The Registry's guidance notes name twenty approved outside venues, plus the Mario Finlayson Gallery and the Mayor's Parlour inside the City Hall. The list includes St Michael's Cave, the Botanic Gardens, the Garrison Library, Grand Battery House, Boyd's Kings Bastion, the two rowing clubs, Udaya Beach Club and a number of restaurants and hotels. The Mount, the Caleta Hotel, the Bristol Hotel and the Mons Calpe Suite are widely recommended online but do not appear on it.

Is the Mons Calpe Suite open for weddings in 2026?

We could find no evidence that it is. The venue sits at the cable car's top station, the cable car closed on 18 November 2025 for a rebuild of roughly two years, and the venue's own social channel said it had no plans to reopen while the new cable car project is developed. It is also absent from the Registry's approved venue list. If a planner offers it, ask to see a confirmed Registrar booking before paying anything.

How much does it cost to get married in Gibraltar in 2026?

The official fees are 124.00 pounds for the Special Licence and 186.50 pounds for a weekday ceremony at the Registry Office, or 309.50 pounds at an outside location after hours or on a Saturday, with certificates at 37.00 pounds each and at least two advised. That is 384.50 pounds for the weekday route and 507.50 pounds for the Saturday one, before any venue, planner, photographer or notary fee. The older figures of 117.50 and 176.50 were superseded when the guidance was reissued for September 2026.

Can same sex couples marry in Gibraltar?

Yes. Same sex marriage has been legal since 15 December 2016 under the Civil Marriage Amendment Act 2016, which Parliament passed on 26 October 2016 and which received assent on 1 November. The Marriage Act provides for marriage between two persons, and the Special Licence route under Section 13 is open to residents and non residents alike. The Act does protect ministers of religion and religious organisations from being compelled to take part, so the civil ceremony is the legal act and any religious blessing is arranged separately.

Can we have a ceremony on the beach in Gibraltar?

Not on the sand. A ceremony has to take place at an approved venue, and the nearest option on the Registry's list is Udaya Beach Club at 10 Eastern Beach. Several pages describe clifftop hotel terraces as the legal equivalent of a beach wedding, but the two venues usually named for that are not on the approved list, so check the current guidance before you commit to one.

When is the Registry closed for wedding ceremonies?

The guidance says no ceremonies take place during Easter or pre Christmas week, that they resume shortly after the New Year, and that none are held on Gibraltar public holidays, which differ from British ones. It does not publish exact closure dates and asks couples to confirm them with staff on marriages.diha@gibraltar.gov.gi. The 21 December to 5 January window quoted on many wedding pages, including this one until today, is not what the guidance states.

Do we have to stay overnight in Gibraltar for our wedding?

Yes, and it is a legal requirement rather than a courtesy. Non residents must satisfy the Registrar that they are staying in Gibraltar for a minimum of one night, immediately before or immediately after the ceremony, with evidence provided no later than the day before. A Gibraltar hotel bill or a Gibraltar apartment booking is named in the guidance as acceptable proof, so book accommodation in the couple's own names with the wedding night paid for.
